چکیده

ion Mathematicians like to talk about how things behave, rather than what they are. Nonmathematicians often prefer the reverse. "Anything that behaves this way is a vector (because I said so)" is not a natural way of talking to the nonmathematician. Mathematicians ought to be more sensitive to this than they typically are. Repeating examples in different words, emphasizing the equivalence of the various means of expression rather than which expression came "first," is important. Once students understand the ideas expressed in some language, they will be more willing to study the logical paths between them. The choice of words is important. "Point" and "line" should be used only for the common geometric ideas they convey. "Vector" seems as good as any term for the abstract notion.

From random polynomials to symplectic geometry

We review some recent results on random polynomials and their generalizations in complex and symplectic geometry. The main theme is the universality of statistics of zeros and critical points of (generalized) polynomials of degree N on length scales of order D √ N (complex case), resp. D N (real case).

Concentration of Measure Inequalities and Their Communication and Information-Theoretic Applications

During the last two decades, concentration of measure has been a subject of various exciting developments in convex geometry, functional analysis, statistical physics, high-dimensional statistics, probability theory, information theory, communications and coding theory, computer science, and learning theory. One common theme which emerges in these fields is probabilistic stability: complicated,...

A continuous approximation fitting to the discrete distributions using ODE

The probability density functions fitting to the discrete probability functions has always been needed, and very important. This paper is fitting the continuous curves which are probability density functions to the binomial probability functions, negative binomial geometrics, poisson and hypergeometric. The main key in these fittings is the use of the derivative concept and common differential ...

A geometry of information, I: Nerves, posets and differential forms

The main theme of this workshop (Dagstuhl seminar 04351) is ‘Spatial Representation: Continuous vs. Discrete’. Spatial representation has two contrasting but interacting aspects (i) representation of spaces’ and (ii) representation by spaces. In this paper we will examine two aspects that are common to both interpretations of the theme, namely nerve constructions and refinement. Representations...
